Manxing designed and supplied a customized grain storage and handling system that combined high-capacity steel silos, automated conveying equipment, and intelligent monitoring technologies. The project was delivered as a complete EPC solution, covering engineering design, equipment manufacturing, installation guidance, and commissioning.
Customer Challenges
Before the upgrade, the customer encountered several operational issues:
Limited storage capacity during peak harvest periods
Grain quality deterioration caused by moisture and temperature fluctuations
High labor costs for loading, unloading, and stock management
Slow truck loading and receiving efficiency
Difficulty managing multiple grain varieties separately
Growing demand from downstream customers requiring faster deliveries
The customer required a storage system that would improve inventory turnover while maintaining grain quality and reducing operational costs.
Manxing Solution
Based on the customer's annual trading volume and site conditions, Manxing developed an integrated grain storage solution featuring modular steel silos and automated grain handling equipment.
The solution included:
Large-capacity galvanized steel grain silos
Truck receiving pit
Bucket elevators
Belt conveyors
Chain conveyors
Grain cleaning equipment
Grain distribution system
Temperature monitoring system
Grain level monitoring system
Aeration ventilation system
PLC automatic control system
Dust collection system
The complete system enables efficient grain receiving, cleaning, storage, inventory management, and rapid dispatch to customers.
Project Overview & Design
| Parameter | Specification |
| Storage Scale | 6 steel silos, each with 5,000 tons capacity, total 30,000 tons |
| Target Commodities | Maize (corn), soybeans, sorghum, and other major tradable grains in Nigeria |
| Construction Standard | Designed for Nigeria's tropical climate – with emphasis on moisture-proofing, pest control, and forced ventilation |
Storage Cycle & Operational Strategy
For commercial grain traders, we recommend a "fast-turnover + flexible rotation" model, while also retaining the capability for medium-to-long-term storage.
| Storage Cycle Type | Duration | Business Application |
| Commercial fast turnover | 3 – 6 months | Capitalize on seasonal price spreads; rapid capital return |
| Medium-to-long-term reserve | 12 – 24 months | Hedge against price volatility; or participate in government strategic reserve partnerships |
This scale qualifies as a mid-sized commercial grain depot, positioned between community-level warehouses and the national strategic reserves (which consist of 33 large silos with a total capacity of 1.3 million tons). It is ideal for flexible, profit-driven trading operations.
Operating Process
Grain delivered by trucks is unloaded into the receiving pit before passing through a cleaning system to remove impurities.
The cleaned grain is transported by bucket elevators and belt conveyors into designated storage silos according to grain type and quality grade.
Throughout the storage period, the aeration system and temperature monitoring system continuously maintain suitable storage conditions, helping preserve grain quality and reduce spoilage.
When customer orders are received, the PLC control system automatically activates the discharge equipment, conveying grain from the selected silo to the truck loading station quickly and efficiently.
The automated handling process significantly reduces loading time while improving inventory accuracy and operational efficiency.
Project Benefits
Increased Storage Capacity
The customer can now purchase large quantities of grain during harvest seasons when market prices are lower, maximizing trading opportunities.
Improved Grain Quality
Temperature monitoring and aeration systems help maintain optimal storage conditions, minimizing moisture damage, mold growth, and insect infestation.
Faster Grain Turnover
Automated conveying equipment enables rapid loading and unloading, allowing more trucks to be processed each day.
Lower Operating Costs
Automation reduces manual labor requirements and improves overall equipment efficiency, lowering long-term operating expenses.
Flexible Inventory Management
Separate silos allow different grain varieties and quality grades to be stored independently, making inventory management more organized and responsive to customer demand.
Scalable System Design
The modular steel silo structure allows additional storage capacity to be added in the future without disrupting existing operations.
Project Results
Following project completion, the customer achieved significant operational improvements:
Expanded grain storage capacity to support seasonal procurement
Improved grain preservation throughout extended storage periods
Reduced truck waiting and loading times
Increased inventory turnover efficiency
Lower labor and maintenance costs
Enhanced customer satisfaction through faster order fulfillment
Greater flexibility in responding to market price fluctuations
The modern storage system has become an important part of the customer's grain trading business, enabling higher operational efficiency and sustainable long-term growth.
